Thanksgiving Weekend Sesshin
a two day retreat with Sensei in Columbus.

Progress report on Great Determination...The north half of the floor is now in use. Each "tile" is a wheelbarrow load of sifted dirt, cement and short straw troweled smooth and then burnished lightly. It has a lovely rustic appearance.  As the process becomes more familiar the pace speeds up so the south and west parts are going well. Lots of help from Sangha members has eased the work load and lifted our hearts. The middle eastern part of the floor is where the "rocket stove" masonry heating system goes. "Big Sky"
- the first Kuti meditation/retreat space to take form on the property is up. "Big Sky" is a treehouse design (Yes, you ARE reading treehouse!), with a gentle environmental impact and a solid, durable construction that will allow eventual adaptation for year-round retreat/living space. "Big Sky" is intended to be made available for retreat/meditation space to persons of all practice traditions from AZC, Zen Columbus, and the Buddhist community beyond. Construction should be done by the end of the summer, and we are hoping to have a blessing/dedication celebration when we finish. - Don Brewer

"Under a vast blue sky this
wondrous presence is here,
replacing habitual worrisome
thoughts and feelings. They can't
survive the deep silence of open
being. It is not brought about by
anything or anyone - it is here
without effort, without time." - Toni Packer

Qigong practice follows meditation and discussion at UCM on Sundays ...
a healthful adjunct to sitting meditation, offered at 11:15-12:00 on Sundays following meditation at UCM. Sensei found that Tai Chi is too difficult for the drop in student on Sundays and is leading exercises in Qigong for health and spiritual development. "It's much easier for the beginners to pick up and follow and probably more beneficial too,  if someone wanted specifically to learn the Tai Chi style taught by Michael Clark, her teacher she would consider teaching them but for Sunday mornings the Qigong works better " said Sensei.

Three photos of the floor in progress. Left shows the insulating layer of straw and adobe over the washed river stone, Center is a treasured stamp from the great resident Boddhisattva dog and Right shows the stone paver effect obtained by trowelling a wheelbarrow load of dirt, straw and cement in irregular shapes over the straw rich adobe.
